Aikido is a Japanese martial art that manipulates aggression and force of the attacker by shifting the direction of the force back to the attacker. The shifting of balance is the most effective way of knocking down the opponent. But unlike other martial arts, aikido still strives to protect the attacker from injuries as well. It is a defensive way of fighting like Judo which also uses the attackers’ power to counter attack and restrain the attacker. Aikido is literally translated as "the Way of unifying life energy" or as "the Way of harmonious spirit". It does not seek to hurt the opponent rather it only aims to restrain and prevent further attacks.
Aikido is founded by Morihei Ueshiba as a generalization of all of his martial arts knowledge, philosophy, and personal beliefs. He stresses that opponents are part of a bigger family and should treat each other as family members would behave. This discipline focuses on defending oneself while defending the attacker as well. He questions the human judgment on the underlying logic of our actions. Even though aikido has evolved to other versions, the core essence of aikido still remains (the well being of the attacker). These versions only differ in the emphasis of the versions the same with the different animal styles of kung- fu, the different areas of attack of Tae Kwon Do and even the different stances of Tai- chi. Aikido became diverse mainly because of the different interpretations, preference, and emphasis of the late master Morihei Ueshiba’s disciples.
The basic training of practitioners would usually start from learning how to fall and roll, Aikido training is composed usually of throws and takedowns. Even if Aikido is an established martial art criticisms like the lack of the essence of realness in the training is still being raised. But still amongst criticisms, Aikido is still one of the world’s most practiced arts of self- defense.
