T'ai Chi Ch'aun
T'ai Chi Ch'uan places the mind and body in harmony, and by its literal translations
reveals its nature. "Ch'uan" means fist. Control is the main factor--control over
one's actions. T'ai Chi Ch'uan is organized movement and at the same time the
ultimate in self-protection. The idea of the fist takes on different meanings in
the West and East. The West views the clenched fist as a weapon of destruction,
aggressive attack, pounding the opponent into the ground. The East is more in
line with concentration, an inner force generating to the surface. The fist becomes
separate from the rest of the body as the energy becomes concentrated in the
fingers and hand. In T'ai Chi Ch'aum, Ch'aum means that the active is controlled
by the inactive--the active is form and matter, the inactive, spirit and mind.
The inactive control therefore places this particular martial art in the role
of the softest of them all, the greatest amount of control is gained with the
least physical effort. All life , according to this principle, has been set
in motion by two vital energies: Yin, the passive, and Yang, the active, both
of which feed off one another, complement each other. The motion or action
in T'ai Chi Ch'aun is the Yang and the stationary or stillness is the Yin.
hey are always in perfect harmony.
The movements in T'ai Chi Ch'aun, the Inner and the Outer, are held together by the mental
concentration necessary to reach harmony. The Inner Movement is the mind, and is still in
the act of concentration. Quietness is the goal, and the Chi, the inner vital force, is
reached when mind, breath, and sexual energy come together. T'ai Chi Ch'aun masters
concentrate on inner breathing. The breathing itself, is practiced until a kind of
heat is produced in the psychic center, found three inches below the navel. The heat,
like vapor, is then given off and distributed to other parts of the body. It is
essential to pinpoint the psychic center and feel its increasing store of energy.
Then, after the heat reaches the limbs, the T'ai Chi Ch'aun player is propelled
into action.
It is not advisable for a beginner to force the pace of abdominal breathing. The
beginner should breathe in through his nose, slowly and in one relaxed draft, drawing
the air deep within him, expanding the diaphragm and lower abdomen. Then he should
exhale through his mouth, slowly, very slowly, until all the air is squeezed out by
a steady but not forced contraction of the diaphragm. When the abdomen is finely
relaxed, the Chi energy becomes active. It must be remembered that breathing as well
as Chi is controlled by the mind.
One of the most baffling aspects of martial arts is "mind force," the principle of Chi, which states that a man who
ith total balance. The slightest loss of control breaks the pattern and interrupts the continuity. It disrupts the
smoothness necessary for proper execution. With the body erect and in a central position, the player's body in an
attitude of self-defense is like a bow and arrow, aiming directly at his target.
Along with the central position relaxation is necessary. The body acts as a series of electric impulses in T'ai Chi Ch'uan but all
movements are at the same energy level rather than any one part of the body being either more or less relaxed than another. In that
way the action flows smoothly, each form following the previous one as if the player were engaged in a ballet. One movement flows
naturally into the next.
T'ai Chi Ch'uan movements are always circular. When at he player moves, his limbs rotate, without sharp turns or angles. The limbs
are not the motivators of the movement; they are rather the transmitters of it. The mind is the motivator, the body the executor
with all its parts working as a complete unit. When a player strikes with his fist, for instance, the energy is generated from his
entire body in motion after the mind's command to act. The fist is the last part of the body to receive the initial instruction to
act as it collides with its target. The T'ai Chi Ch'uan player knows that the impact will be far greater if he throws his body
into the swing.

T'ai Chi Ch'aun
Tai Chi is an old martial art which can be dated back as far as 1820s, but still it is believed
that this discipline has existed longer that what has been documented. Tai Chi is literally
translated as "supreme fist". It is practiced before as a meditative form of practicing self
defense and a good exercise. But to this modern world, Tai Chi became a prescribed Chinese
traditional medicine. Tai Chi is also linked to some other Martial Arts like Kung-fu and
Self- defense. Like Kung-fu it makes the flow of energy take place in the most efficient
and possible way, it also makes use of body movements as a way of Self- defense.
Tai Chi has five basic components: pushing hands, self defense, internal strength, hand forms
and weapon forms. Pushing hands makes the body repose in a way that it instinctively moves at
given situations, it develops the habitual reactions of our limbs. Self- defense is an application
of the other four components of Tai Chi. It allows the manipulation of chi or energy to one’s
. Internal strength prepares the body for possible injuries that one may get while defending
him/herself. This component lets the body to recover faster and react less destructive to attacks
and injuries. A hand form is the empty hand of routine which a practitioner practices through the
first component which is pushing hands. On the other hand weapon forms introduce different weapons
such as sword, saber and spear in the routines.
Tai chi is considered as a soft form of Martial Arts, due to its emphasis on the importance of the
mastery of one’s energy or chi. Just like Kung- fu, aikido, and Tae Kwon Do, it specializes on
the attack on vital points of one’s body. While doing so, it still let the body react to
attacks with ease through the preparations it gives through internal strength and pushing hands.
Though usually slow, Tai chi is an art that can muster large force with ease and agility.
